Highlights from Tax Year 2013





In our own words - here is what happened to us in 2013:


Rang in the new year with friends: Megan, David, Zoe and Ian Scott, and Carolyn, Reed, Priya, Jolie and Lucien Semedo-Strauss. Food, fireworks, and great fun - January 1

I hung the blinds in Maya and Jonah's room with no (ok - just a little) problem - Mommy, January 4

We went to the Washington Wizards basketball game after dinner at Tony Cheng's Mongolian BBQ. They won! We had fun! - Mommy, January 12

Seeing food being cooked in front of us at Tony Cheng's - Maya, January 12

Going skiing with Garrett - Jonah, January 15

Going ice skating with Kaiya - Maya, January Jonah woke up and we sit-snuggled on the couch. I liked it - Mommy, January 18

We went skiing with the Grafs - January 18-21 We saw a raccoon run across our street - Maya, January

Having time with Pop while Mom and Jonah were skiing - Maya, January 21

While I was swimming in the ocean at Cocoa Beach (awesome) my pants and underwear got stolen from the rental car - Poppy, January

Maya and I did the challenge course at Camp Crowell with the Girl Scouts - FUN!! - Mommy, February 9

Rebecca turned 43 years old and Kristin, Ingrid and Amelia spent the night. Dinner at Elevation Burger and dessert at Gaylord - February 9

Spent the night in Warrenton, VA with the Batchelders and Gaytans. Adults went to a delicious dinner and the kids had a fun babysitter. So much fun - February 16

Making a fire with Reece and Cooper - Jonah, February 17

Gabe, Ben and Alexa came for a visit over the weekend - Maya, February

I know you think we have a stinky, poopy, circus! Madagascar 3 with Aunt Christine, Gabe and Ben - February 23

Demo kitchen dinner at Society Fair! Yummy! Frisee salad with bacon, lamb chops on faro risotto with mushrooms and butternut squash - Rebecca, February 15

A snow day! Last night we drove to Bryce with the Grafs and spent the day playing in 10 inches of snow - Mommy, March 6

We went on a family hike across a volcanic crater and saw the glow of the active volcano - March 28

We went night snorkeling with Manta Rays! We saw a bunch, including Big Bertha - March 31

I swam with dolphins, twice!! At Ho'o'keena Beach Park and at Place of Refuge. 8 and 13 dolphins - Rebecca, April 4


Mom and Maya went kayaking with the Girl Scouts at Camp Winona - May 17

Maya and mommy ran the Girls on the Run 5K (Pop and Jonah came to watch and cheer) - May 19


The family discovered the awesome Princess Bride movie. Inconceivable that we had not seen it before! - May 22

Paul had his 1st furlough day (no work). We went to lunch at Restaurant Eve. Delish! - Rebecca, May 24



Mommy and Jonah went to the Botanical Gardens for a school field trip and saw plants from Hawaii - May 30

I ran a 5K in New Jersey for my friend Andy's charity - Paul, June 2

Jonah was captain at the after school soccer game! - Mommy, June 5

My long time buddy Jim Matheson in town for work. I went out with him and some friends - Paul, June 5

Paul, Rebecca, Cathy and Jonathon went to dinner at Cashion's Eat Place - June 6

Aunt Cathy and Jonathan visited. We went to Arlington Cemetery and to the Nats game. The Nats lost. Maya played with Priya and Jolie instead - June 7


Maya had her first orchestra concert and did a great job. We are so proud of her for being the first Carlino to stand on a stage and play an instrument in a concert! - Poppy, June 11

My cousin Sung Chi visited from Hong Kong. We had a fun night and an amazing home cooked banquet at Opa and PoPo's house. And the idea of Shaky Rickshaw beer . . . Rebecca, June 13
I went to my 25th high school reunion and danced all night! Laura Lundsgard flew in from Illinois      and Kristin joined us. So much fun! - Rebecca, June 21 

A deer followed me and kissed me at Wolf Lake! - Mommy, July 7 
Wolf Lake - Maya's first bear sighting, Jonah's first bass caught, and Mom's first deer kiss - Poppy, July

Maya and I picked raspberries next to our campsite at Washington Crossing State Park while Paul and Jonah watched a softball game. I hope Maya remembers doing that with me - Mommy, July 12



Nutella Day! Maya made Nutella crepes with bananas and we shared them with Lena, Brian, Kit, Kelly, Heidi and Chris - July 24

Maya shook out her jacket at school to get it ready to put on and a pair of Jonah's underwear came flying out. Luckily, no one saw! - August 6

I saw the Presidents of the United States of America live in concert at the 9:30 club - Paul, August

We went to see Meadow Batchelder play Patty in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. But first we got a flat tire. Opa came to the rescue. When we got home, Heidi shared her birthday cake - Mommy, August 18


We went to Great Country Farms today with Maddie Kysilko and Bennett Sample. Then Maya slept at Ellie Nebolsine's house and Jonah had his first sleepover at Bennett's! - September 7

Maya and Poppy went to the Newseum and Mommy and Jonah went to Mt. Vernon. Then Jonah and Reece had a lemonade stand and a fire. We watched Narnia for movie night - Friday, September 13



My exponential math equation: I'm x+y+z in parenthesis. Cubed. Definitely not squared - Paul, September 14

Jonah played his first baseball game (Team Barons) and scored his first run. He won his first game! - September 21

Christine, Cathy, and Gabe came to visit for the weekend on the occasion of Mom's birthday. Went to dinner to celebrate and had a super fun dance party when we came back from dinner. We miss you, Mom! - Paul, September 21

Maya had her first volleyball practice and the whole family came out and watched - Maya, September 22

We have lots of beautiful red tomatoes from our garden - Rebecca, September 23

We climbed Currituck Lighthouse, went to Jockey Ridge State Park with sand dunes,and to Kitty Hawk National Park, collected shells, built a sand castle that withstood the tide, and ate Duck Donuts (yummmm) - Mommy, October

Maya had her first volleyball game. She served and played really well! It was so exciting watching her - Poppy, October 3



Paul has been furloughed for one week. Tonight he carved a jack'o lantern and roasted pumpkin seeds - Mommy, October 7

Maya and Jonah and Maddie and Nate Kysilko went to Cox Farms with Opa and PoPo. They brought home 11 pumpkins (and we ate one) - October 24

Maya and Zoe won their first volleyball match! Both served the winning point for their games. Then we went to Dairy Godmother and had butter beer - October 25

Tonight, carolers came and sang to us! It was the first time it's ever happened to any of us! - December 13

Maya turned 11 years old and Aunt Cathy joined the party - December 14

We went skiing at Mountain Creek with Susanne Ebling, Director of Ski Patrol. Gabe went skiing for the first time (the next day Paul and I went back by ourselves) - Mommy, December 31
